The calls for a BBi referendum continues to intensify with the handshake and ODM brigade aware its racing against time. Even before January ends- a month considered dull and of no or little activity — the handshake team as lined up a series of BBi rallies to intensify calls for a referendum within 6 months.
The first of such kind was in Kisii county yesterday where a host of pro handshake MPs, senators and governors were present . Another meeting is scheduled for the 18th of January at Bukhungu stadium – organised by Francis Atwoli and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya. It’s believed Uhuru Kenyatta has been invited for this event. Siaya Senator James Orengo says these 2 rallies are the first of many aimed at popularizing the BBi and taking it to the grassroots.
But Deputy President William is of a different view wondering why public money should be used to popularize a document that everybody has accepted .
” We have all accepted the BBi report and we have agreed to pass it as it is. We have also agreed we will read it for ourselves. Why should we use tax payers money for a few politicians to read for the people”, asked the Deputy President.
Siaya senator James Orengo was the first one to fire the salvo saying referendum must be done within the first 6 months of 2020. ODM leader has also waded into the debate saying BBi referendum must happen in 6 months. “We want everybody, we want inclusivity. Referendum must happen in 6 months”, said Raila.
But political experts aware with constitution amendments believe having a referendum within the first 6 months of 2020 is impossible considering the numerous procedures that any plebiscite should go though. The Constitutional amendment process is often a rigorous one calling for a by partisan time if its to be achieved in a shorter time. But with political bickering and division currently experienced in the political space, the handshake team must do something extraordinary if its to be realized in 6 months.
