Panic has gripped the larger populous Rift Valley as the BBI brigade is expected to take the region by storm. The region which is largely pro-Ruto and anti-BBI has been targeted by the BBI Secretariat as the counties earmarked for sensitization rallies. Others are Kiambu, Mombasa, Embu, Meru, Garissa, and Narok.

Already the Rift Valley BBI team led by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi as hit the ground running with a major rally scheduled for 64 stadium in Eldoret on the 16th of February. According to a strategy paper seen by Daily Star, the declaration will follow a similar script to Bukhungu Declaration and will be dubbed “Eldoret Declaration”. The declaration to be read by Gideon Moi will proclaim the regions support for the radical changes to the BBI report to include the post of executive Prime Minister and 2 deputies as was in the case of Bukhungu rally.

The strategy goes further to highlight measures they seek to undertake to elevate the senator’s stature in the region as he jostles for bargaining power in the expected constitution. Gideon Moi is believed to be jostling for one of the deputy prime minister’s position as he bargains for the populous former Rift Valley province. Ann Waiguru has already expressed interest in one of the two deputy premier’s position under the new BBi framework. She will be in charge of BBI activities in the larger Mt. Kenya region together with Muranga governor Mwangi wa Iria.

According to Gideon Moi, Rift valley is supportive of BBI and the region will rally behind Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. “Rift Valley is not anybody’s bedroom. As far as I know, the region fully supports BBI and the proposed constitutional changes”, he said.

But in what might be the center of confrontation is the looming Eldoret Declaration. Majority of MPs from Rift Valley have threatened to block the said rally as it will paint the region negatively as supportive of BBI and proposed BBI changes.

“You see, politics is about perception and when ODM comes here and makes a declaration that the region has supported changes for the position of powerful premier and 2 deputies, then we have lost it. We will not allow”, said a vocal MP from the region who requested for anonymity. If the MPs make good their threat to block the rally, then it will be a blow to the BBI team considering the region is largely anti-BBi.
