Renowned businessman and 2017 Uasin Gishu gubernatorial candidate Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich popularly known within political and business circles as Buzeki has endorsed Raila Odinga for 2022 Presidential race, while officially dumping his former ally DP William Ruto.
Buzeki who is the Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) Secretary General, announced the move on his official twitter page on Wednesday saying time was ripe for the opposition leader Raila Odinga who has sacrificed a lot for Kenya and democracy. Buzeki noted that 2022 calls for a shift from the dynamic duo of UhuRUTo arguing that Raila Odinga also deserves a chance as a son of Kenya.
Buzeki’s support for Raila Odinga may not come as a surprise since he has been critical of Jubilee administration and in particular the Deputy President William Ruto.
His recent covert signals have been showing a man gravitating towards Raila Odinga but was somehow afraid probably because he wasn’t sure about the move. But time was bound to tell and it did.
While Buzeki’s move to endorse Raila may be interpreted as a blow to DP Ruto for losing one of his key allies, it may as well turn out to be a doubled-edged sword that will completely harm his political aspirations for Uasin Gishu governorship in 2022.
Whereas Uasin Gishu is largely cosmopolitan, it’s not lost that DP William Ruto has a fanatic following and anyone who opposes him will only come close to elective leadership in their futile imaginations.
That’s the nature of tribal politics in Kenya or so they say and Uasin Gishu county is no exception.
BUzeki had hitherto been billed as the leading contender to take over from Jackson Mandago who is serving his last term. In 2017, Buzeki ran on an independent ticket against Mandago of Jubilee losing by a handful of votes– approximately 40,000.
This achievement was no mean feat considering he was running against an incumbent Jubilee candidate in a Jubilee stronghold.
According to Buzeki, the election of Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in 2013 was to safe them from Hague’s hangman’s noose and with that having been achieved, Buzeki believes that Raila Odinga deserves a chance in 2022. According to the business mogul, this will help end tribalism that has become part of Kenyan political fabric.
Buzeki endorses Raila at a time when there are political re-alignments brought about by the agitation for a referendum and the move might be part of the wider jostling by politicians for a stake in the new BBI framework fronted by Raila if at all it will pass.
