Ruto defends deal to transfer Nairobi county functions to National government

Deputy President William Ruto has supported the transfer of Nairobi county functions to the national government saying all actors were consulted.

According to Ruto, all actors should support President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mike Sonko in a the deal since its meant at improving service delivery for the people of Nairobi.

On Monday, Sonko surprised the Nation when he signed an agreement to transfer some key functions to the National government.

The four key functions to be managed by the national government are transport, health, planning, and public works.

“Support this noble effort to ensure our city functions smoothly. The management of Nairobi city has been a major source of concern for the government and Nairobians,” DP Ruto said.

Ruto revealed that Uhuru, the IEBC, and the Council of Governors consulted severally over the matter before the transfer was arrived.

Senators have criticized the move saying its a plan to kill devolution. During a heated debate in the senate yesterday, Senate Majority leader moved a motion questioning the constitutionality of the the transfer.

According to Kipchumba Murkomen, the transfer was no debated by the county assembly and there was no public participation as required by the law.

The senate has summoned the Attorney General and the Council of Governors for questioning.

The State House has defended the deal, saying that the move was legal and will ensure smooth service delivery to the people of Nairobi
