The iconic Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) is at the risk of being auctioned over Sh. 211M debt owed to suppliers. KICC is led by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s niece Nana Gecaga who has overseen the run down of the once profitable institution. Already suppliers who did business with KICC have said they will be moving to court seeking auction orders in a bid to recover their money. President Uhuru Kenyatta had ordered all contractors and suppliers who did business with government entities be paid immediately but several months have passed with many not yet paid.
Over 60 business entities owe a paltry sum of Sh 200 million which the center is unable to pay. A huge chuck of these amount date back to 2015 during the World Trade Organization(WTO) conference. The office of the Auditor-General has since verified the pending bills and said KICC risk auctioning if it does not meet its debt obligations.
“KICC risks auctioning of its assets if the claims are not settled, as most claimants have valid contracts, LSOs, LPOs, invoices and award letters,” the audit report reads.
Despite President Uhuru Kenyatta directing that all pending bills, several government entities and county government are yet settle the claims. Treasury CS Yukur Yatani had threatened to withhold funds to counties that have not paid their pending bills, but the directive was quashed by the courts.
The suppliers have now instructed their lawyers to file a case in the High Court. KICC CEO has been accused of high handedness in the manner she runs the affairs of the institution. in 2019, she appeared late and in tattered denim trouser before a parliamentary committee for questioning over financial impropriety at the iconic center. She was supposed to shed light into irregular payment of Sh 86 million owed during the 2018/19 financial year which had been flagged off by the auditor general.
Several investigation files touching on corruption at the iconic center are gathering dust at the EACC and DCI as no one is brave enough to touch them. According to sources at EACC, Nena Gecaga responsible for making fictitious and dubious payment amounting to Sh 50 million when KICC hosted two American Singers, Blackstreet boys and SWV. Its believed she pocket Sh 25 million as kickback. She is also accused of flouting procurement rules and overpaying suppliers in a bid to get kickbacks. The total cumulative pending bills KICC owe suppliers stand at over Sh. 667 million with over Sh. 400 million accumulated during Nana Gecaga’s tenure.
