DCI boss George Kinot has said DP Ruto’s office in Harambee Annex is a crime scene following the arrest of former CS Rashid Echesa for defrauding international investors in a fake tender scam that has hit headlines.
True to Kinoti’s words, on Saturday, Harambee Annex was a crime scene as detectives probing the fake military firearms raided the office and ransacked it upside down in a bid to get crucial evidence.
The detectives combed through the CCTV footage for several hours in an investigation that has robbed in Ruto’s personal aide Faruk Kibet.
According to detectives, Rashid could not have pulled such an heist alone and are now closing in on the ring leaders. The DCI believes Faruk by virtue of his position in the DP’s office knew or ought to have known when such a humongous deal was struck.
Others targeted are Ruto’s private secretary Reuben Maiyo and chief of staff Ken Osinde.
The detectives could not however confirm when the trio will be summoned for questioning.
The scam took a new twist yesterday when DP Ruto distanced himself from the scam urging the police to go for the perpetrators . Defense Cabinet Secretary Amb. Monica Juma also dissociated herself saying her signature was forged.
Echesa was on Friday remanded for 3 days to allow complete investigations.
Questions have been raised as to how fraudsters masquerading as government official could hold meetings in DP Ruto’s boardroom without raising suspicion. It’s against this premise that detective believe the scam was executed with the blessing of top aides at Harambee Annex.
Opposition leaders have joint the fray calling for the questioning of DP William Ruto over the scam. Siaya senator James Orengo led the opposition MPs in calling for the grilling of the deputy president. The MPs said they will be willing to escort Ruto to DCI Headquarters.
“I’m ready to escort William Ruto on Monday to the DCI to record a statement. The deputy president office is the second highest in this country and has been brought into disrepute. It’s only proper that Ruto should clear the air on this matter on what he knows”, said Orengo
