Uhuru postpones Kisumu port launch to allow for investigations

The much anticipated launch of Kisumu port has been postponed indefinitely. The official launch was to be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga on Thursday 14th this week. Communication from the President’s office cited Uhuru Kenyatta’s tight scheduled but did not say exactly his intenary for that day.

Kisumu governor Anyang Nyongo had billed the event as marking the culmination of the much awaited development to the people of Kisumu and that it will open endless opportunities for investments and jobs for the youth.

The news of postponement will come as a disappointment to the people of Kisumu who were eagerly waiting to receive President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. Its believed the President would have also used the visit to Kisumu to drum up support for BBi with Raila Odinga.

Uhuru has been making private secret visits to the port supposedly to check on the progress of refurbishment. Although billed as a Ksh.10 billion project, the exact cost of refurbishment is said to be Ksh. 800M- a figure that was inflated from Ksh. 200M to include kickbacks according to the DCI. The matter is under investigation and has seen Kenya Ports Authority managing Director Daniel Manduku quizzed by detectives. Uhuru has been keen no to be associated with corrupt politicians and corrupt-ridden projects and perhaps it’s this matter of dci investigations that informed the postponement.
